Router
When looking at your in-home WiFi network, you may have noticed that there are two networks with the same name, only one ends in 5G. This is because your router is dual-band. This means it transmits two simultaneous wireless signals, 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
So, which should you use - 2.4GHz or 5GHz? It comes down to what is more important to you - range or bandwidth. Range is how far data can travel. Bandwidth, or speed, determines how fast you can upload and download files.
2.4GHz | 5GHz | |
---|---|---|
Range | Covers a larger area in your home and has further range than 5GHz | Covers a smaller area in your home and has less range than 2.4GHz |
Usage/Bandwidth | Email, instant messaging, web browsing | Streaming videos or music, online gaming |
Interference | More susceptible to interference from other electronics, like microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors | Less susceptible to interference than 2.4GHz |
